With HP Helion OpenStack, the sky’s the limit

Nothing is stopping Okinawa Cross Head (OCH) from making all the right moves at the right time. This thriving IT services provider based in Okinawa, Japan is seizing the opportunities with a burgeoning SMB cloud services market which is likely to top $3B by 2016 (according to Japan Update: Three Keys to Unlocking this “Mature” Cloud Services Market,” by Joshua Bell and Max Snyder ). By delivering innovative, high-touch, high-margin services via a public cloud, the sky is the limit.

Okinawa Cross Head is no stranger to delivering quality cloud services. They have had several major successes, including nas2cloud, a popular service that monitors and controls data center functions in such a highly competitive environment, how has OCH stood out from the pack? CEO Tadaaki Tokashiki believes open source OpenStack technology is key. Nas2cloud is based on OpenStack Community which has given OCH a fast and cost-efficient development platform. The nas2cloud storage service components including network attached storage is housed on a HP ProLiant MicroServer, and shipped directly to SMBs for housing in customer data centers.

Solution with exact capabilities important for the business

The OCH technical team is proficient with open source solutions - especially OpenStack, so when it came time to enhance the nas2cloud application disaster recovery capabilities with the OpenStack Object Storage (SWIFT), they didn’t foresee technical issues. However, the team soon realized the native OpenStack platform lacked features required for SWIFT adoption. Not only was this upgrade important to enhancing the customer experience with the service, it was also focal to aggressive business expansion plans. OCH is a prominent member of Okinawa Smart Hub, a private-public partnership with a goal to establish a next-generation ICT infrastructure in Asia. OCH now faced two options: build it themselves or invest in a partner solution. Fortunately, HP had the perfect solution with HP Helion OpenStack.

Business vision, advanced technology, and timing formed a winning combination

HP Helion OpenStack was the ideal solution for OCH’s business and technical requirements. It slotted into the nas2cloud service without a hitch, and it quickly demonstrated its ability to deliver cost-efficient scalability of IT services and greater business agility. Much of the success of the Okinawa Cross Head implementation is credited to the role of the HP OpenStack consultants who provided guidance on strategy, design, implementation, and operation, while helping OCH to see the options and opportunities. HP’s knowledge of OpenStack and the OpenStack Object Storage (SWIFT) was a key factor in this success implementation. As a result of this relationship there’s a dialogue with OCH to use HP Helion OpenStack for other private and hybrid cloud implementations.
