Your hybrid cloud management checklist : 7 key features areas to compare

Train station.PNGWritten contribution from Camilo Cuervo, Product Manager (HPSW Automation and Cloud Management)

Tech conferences are the perfect chance to compare the latest products from IT vendors and ask some hard questions about how they stack up. The tradeshow floor at VMworld 2014 in San Francisco that ended this week was buzzing with demos and discussion about hybrid cloud management solutions - but what should you be looking for?

Here are seven key categories of features in cloud management suites you should closely examine, when selecting your hybrid cloud management solution.

1.   Full stack management — How complete are the solution’s IT automation capabilities? Can it manage existing traditional, virtual, private cloud and hosted cloud services, as well as new ones? Also, be sure to look for the ability to manage from a single pane of glass across servers, databases, networks and storage.

2.   Out-of-the-box content — Your ability to quickly demonstrate value in a cloud management suite is often determined by the amount of customization you have to implement before you can experience results—the more pre-defined flows, operations and application models a suite provides, that faster you can move.

3.   Service designs (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) — Take a close look at how consistent and flexible it will be to model infrastructure and application service designs. Custom service configurations should be easy to create, manage, reused and ported between environments.

4.   Database and middleware management — Is the suite able to manage the full service lifecycle for new as well as pre-existing databases and middleware apps? Admins should be able to easily and quickly create, modify and re-deploy customized installations, migrations and complex three-tier apps.

5.   Extensibility and APIs — It’s essential to assess the heterogeneity of an IT platform to avoid vendor lock-in and other technological constraints. Consider hypervisor and third-party solution integration: How many resource providers are included? How much support is offered for end-to-end non-virtualized functionality?

6.   Consumer and service provider experience — You need to keep in mind the overall consumer and service provider user experience too. What sort of personalization is available—dynamic widgets or service level mashups? How many languages are offered to localize a portal?

7.   Footprint and scale — Finally, evaluate the resource requirements of the cloud solution, as well as how many endpoints it will be able to scale to. Integration, upgrade complexity and storage requirements should all be considered carefully.
