3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT

Hi,

RP7420.

One cell is reporting "3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT" in MP->CM->PS.

I want to understand what could be the problem here. The power seems to be fine from the PDUs but i am sure. I would like to understand with reference to the error message what eaxctly the problem.

Thanks & Regards,

Shashi Kanth

Re: 3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT

Hi Shashi Kanth,

the VRM (DC/DC Controller) #13 on that cell failed. It is part of a 3.3 V rail which supports memory and clock subsystem.
As the other VRMs on this rail (#8-14) work fine, the cell can continue to work.

However, I would recommend to exchange that VRM #13 with the next maintenance window.

Kind Regards

Holger

Re: 3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT

Hi Holger, Thank you.

The system is not continuing to run. After power on the cell, the system hangs.  Whenever the cell powerd on the message "3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT" and when the system hangs "Power status : OFF, 3.3V Rail VOLTAGE FAULT" appears on PS.

Power status : OFF, 3.3V Rail VOLTAGE FAULT.

Please can you guide me how to identify VRM positions? How to identify VRM 13?

Thanks & Regards,

Shashi Kanth

Re: 3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT

Hi Shashi Kanth,

the cell board fails to power on because you even have a voltage rail fault.
So it seems as the failed VRM #13 takes the complete voltage rail down.

The VRM #13 is in the upper left corner of the cell board, between DIMMs 7a and 7b.
However, the VRM is not a customer replaceable part, and I would recommend to call your HP Support for the repair.

HP Support would check the logs for any further issues on the cell and the possible need of exchanging more than one VRM to avoid further issues.

Kind Regards

Holger

Re: 3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT

Today i got one more error.

Power status : OFF, 3.3V Module 0, VRM #8 VOLTAGE FAULT.

How to identify the VRM positions on the cell ? Any document explains the VRM numbers on the cell board?

Re: 3.3V Module 5, VRM #13 VOLTAGE FAULT

Hi Shashi Kanth,

the VRM #8 is on the same voltage rail as VRM #13.
You need to check the MP logs (System Error Log and Forward Progress Log) to check which errors occurred when.
This might be any single VRM of this rail taking down the complete voltage. It may even have caused other VRMs to fail too. And it is even possible (but unlike) that the cell got damaged too.

I think the VRM numbers are labeled on the board.

Kind Regards

Holger
