A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Hi,

Am booting my A500, all HW checks go through fine, PDC can do an sea and see both drives and the dvd rom (attached via SESCSI).

If I boot form the internal disks it boots through ISL starts Hp-UX, reallocates PDC then just sits there, eventually rebooting.

If I boot from the DVD-ROM it does the same except it never reboots it just sits there, the DVD gets accessed and then spins down after timeout.

Any ideas please?

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Hi,

you should try booting in single user mode, or in maintanance mode to see if server comes up.
If not, disconnect all io connected to server, and try booting again. Do you have some error logs in the GSP?

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Hi,

There can be two problems .
1. Your Rood disk got corrupted.
2. at the same time your DVD drive is not working properly.

Did u check GSP for any Errors ?
You try to DVD drive and try to boot boot form CD it should work.

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Just to confirm, the system DOES NOT boot from CD, the same symptoms are exhibited as when I try to boot from internal disks.

Maintenance mode, single user etc seem to make no difference.

I`ll check GSP logs next

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Hi,

if single user mode or maintanance mode are not working, you should disconect all io devices and unplug all iocards from the server. at this level, the server is making some ioscans, and if you have some problems in the io, system will hang or panic at this level. try booting with only the internal disks attached.

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Hi Adam,

I agree with Claudiu.
You probably have a HW problem that's causing a panic when the system is walking the busses on it's normal boot-time device hunt.

At a minimum reseat all cards, RAM & cable connections.

Better yet, if you have a maint contract, call it in & let HP do the work you're paying for.

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Also check for missing SCSI terminators.
One of the A500s we have here was extremely
unhappy when booting until we added a missing SCSI terminator on an otherwise unused bus.
I'm not sure why, but this system seemed much more picky about that than other systems I've used. After adding the missing terminator it's been rock solid for several years.

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

The origional batch of A500 machines had an issue with the SCSI cards where they were not self terminating and crashed the system. I think they have fixed it in the rp2470 era machines...

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Checked termination, replaced the LVD terminator now it gets as far as booting and I get an HPMC

Console reset done.

Boot device reset done.

Re: A500 hang after reallocate PDC

Adam,
CPU 0 requested something at address 0xFF'F877C028 and there was a problem communicating with this device/address.
Please go to PDC (stopping booting machine when it says 'press any key within 10 seconds...'), go to service menu, and capture 'pim' and 'pdt' commands output. Attach them to your next reply
