Adding 2 internal disks to 5470 - procedures or risks

Hi,

Server: rp5470 HP-UX 11.11 (2) mirrored boot disks and 2 empty slots.

We plan on adding two internal disks to a rp5470 server. The disks are 36GB LVD from another server. Question: Do we have to shutdown the server or do anything else before we add the two disk drives? Can we leave it up and running?

10 point to any answers.
Thank you

No need to shut down anything. Page 44 in

Re: Adding 2 internal disks to 5470 - procedures or risks

The disk slots are hot-pluggable, so it is possible to add the disks without shutting down the server.

However, there are 4 disk slots but only 2 disk controllers. Plugging in a disk may cause a SCSI bus reset, which may interfere with the other disk managed by the same controller. Unless there is a hardware problem, the system should automatically recover from the bus reset, but you'll get some log messages anyway.

If your existing disks are mirrored, I would plug in one disk first, check that there are no obvious signs of problems (stale extents appearing on the existing mirrored LVs, long cascades of SCSI error messages or something like that) and then plug in the second disk.

If your existing disks are not mirrored, it would be important to see which slots are currently used and which are not. If the existing disks are both served by one SCSI controller and the empty slots with another, it would be pretty safe to hot-plug the disks. Check the hardware paths of the existing disks to see if this is the case.

If the existing disks are on different SCSI controllers, then both empty slots would be each sharing a bus with an existing disk. In this case, and the existing disks are not mirrored, I would much prefer scheduling a maintenance break for adding the disks instead of hot-plugging... just in case that the new disk might turn out to have a fault that takes down the entire SCSI bus.

Hi Gino,

If your existing disks are mirrored, you don't need to shut down anything.
The disk slots are hot-pluggable, so it is possible to add the disks without shutting down the server. Check the following guide for more details:
