HP RP8420 WON'T BOOT TO MP

I have an rp8420 that just came in and I can not get it to boot to MP it was full of several different Fibre Channel and NIC cards I removed all of those it seems as if the server is trying to boot through those. Is there anyway to just reset the server so it will boot direct to MP like normal?

It get's to a certain point and stops and will do nothing else I did try to use the MP reset button and no luck with that.

Re: HP RP8420 WON'T BOOT TO MP

Hi Jim,

this is a bit confusing.

After power on you should get the MP prompt immediately after some seconds.

Booting the system is something different.

Do you get the MP prompt?

"It get's to a certain point and stops"

Where is that certain point?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HP RP8420 WON'T BOOT TO MP

Hi

If you cant get to the MP then the Core I/O board in slot is either not seeded correctly. Reset this board.

And you are sure that you are booting? No fault lights on any of the power modules?

Refer to the following on page 101:

http://docs.hp.com/en/A6912-96023/A6912-96023.pdf

The Server Does Not Power On
To check for power-related problems:
Step 1. Check the LED for each BPS.
The LED is located in the lower left-hand corner of the power supply face. Table 5-2 shows the
states of the LEDs.
Step 2. Check that the power supply and a minimum of two power cords are plugged into the chassis.
NOTE Two power cords must be connected to A0 and A1 or B0 and B1.
Step 3. Remove and replace any suspect BPS.
The Server Powers On but Then Shuts Down with a Fault Light
To check for the following problems when the server powers on and then off:
Step 1. Check for fault LEDs and check the MP logs for errors.
Step 2. Check that a conductive item has not been dropped or left inside the server chassis.
Step 3. Check the connections on all boards.
Step 4. Check the cables for bent pins.
Step 5. Check the processors for bent pins if processors were just added and the problem has been isolated
to the cell board.
Step 6. Minimize configuration to isolate a potential bad device.

Sorry,

Should read: the core I/O board in slot zero. Reset, check for bent pins.

Re: HP RP8420 WON'T BOOT TO MP

Jim the server doesn't boot to MP, or do you mean BCH? boot console handler, i think you need to resolve a confusion here. Connect to the console serial DB-9 connection in the back of your server through a serial cable or an hp console and press ctrl+B this should take you to the MP

Correct the MP does not come up at all it gets to the point that it should come up and then nothing just stops.

Re: HP RP8420 WON'T BOOT TO MP

hi,

>micheal, the server can have more than one MP, like lots of the cell based systems RP8420 can have upto 4 if the extra SEU is installed

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11894_div/11894_div.HTML

Jim,

how many cells does the system have and how many core IO boards are installed?

is the primary core IO installed in the correct slot?
