INTERNAL DRIVES OF RP7400 HOT-SWAPPABLE?

I have an rp7400, 11.11vi, with two standard internal drives. Although I am booted off the san, one of the internal drives is generating i/o errors. I want to replace the bad drive with the system still up to avoid an outage. Are the internal drives of an rp7400 hot-swappable or do I bring the down the server to replace the disk?

Yes, you can hot swap the disks, using the correct LVM disk replacement procedures.

The disks are behind the "door" at the rear.

Hope this helps!

Re: INTERNAL DRIVES OF RP7400 HOT-SWAPPABLE?

The disk(s) are no longer being used an boot media. I was thinking "bad disk out, good disk in" without any LVM procedures involved.
Is this possible?

Re: INTERNAL DRIVES OF RP7400 HOT-SWAPPABLE?

strings /etc/lvmtab | grep cXtXdX

does it give you the disks' drivers in the output ? if yes,

pvdisplay /dev/dsk/cXtXdX

if they are showing up, but you are sure they are not being used,

pvchange -a n /dev/dsk/cXtXdX

before removing them is a good idea. By running this command, LVM will warn you if the devices are still being used somewhere you might have otherwise forgotten

Thanks gents. Using your information, I confirmed the disk(s) can be removed without impacting the server.

Re: INTERNAL DRIVES OF RP7400 HOT-SWAPPABLE?

Just a nit - although many will interchange the two, "hot swap" and "hot plug" are not quite the same. Hot swap means one can just walk up to it, pull it, perhaps put a new one in and all that needs to happen will happen automagically. Hot plug means it is safe to do electrically, but depending on circumstances other actions may need to be taken, either before, or after, or both.

Re: INTERNAL DRIVES OF RP7400 HOT-SWAPPABLE?

I agree, but the discussion is as old as HP9000 systems are - at least...

Hope this helps!
