Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

guys,

what consequece would it do if I don't do SS_UPDATE after replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard? and how to deal with that activate code when I don't have HP contract?

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

If you boo

t the system with the new board you will likely see:

WARNING:  The system serial number is invalid.

WARNING: Too many CPUs for this system.

The reason is, the system is set up to be a rp4410 with a single core, serial number is not set. Hence you don't have a system ID.

On a rp3440 you can use "init" from the service menu, but IMHO the rp4440 does not support this.

Only HP support can change this, so you need to contact them.

Hope this helps!

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

Hi Torsten,

Some one told me that not SS_UPDATE would not stop server from booting, it would only interfere those application that related to the server's Serial Number; and SS_UPDATE was to synchronize those SN and Product informations that stroed in the IO Baseboard  from other parts of the box.

I did call HP for help, just to get that activate number, but I really what to know whether there was an alternative, it is so terrible that I seek help from HP every time I replace an rp4440's IO baseboard!

The one I queried also said it was similiar when replacing backplane of an rp8400.

The system will not boot with too many cpus. Without the correct settings you have a wrong model string, not all resources available and a invalid system ID (reported e.g. by "uname -a") - some applications will NOT run!

Hope this helps!

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

A "new" board without a serial number or model string set will have problems.  However,  a used board that has the same model string settings will be OK (outside of the change of SN, etc).  Ask the vendor to supply you with an "rp4440" Baseboard specifically.

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

Hi Torsten,

I don't quite follow the meaning of "not boot with too many cpus", how could this happen when I just replace the IO Baseboard?

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

Hi Robert,

model string should mean product number of this rp4440, like A7124A, right?

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

The default model string of a new base board is set to

Main Menu: Enter command or menu > in all

Model: hp server . (model string 9000/800/rp4410#1)

This means a maximum of  1  CPU core.

You can have up to 8 CPU cores in a rp4440 - so you may have too many CPU cores installed.

After a replacement the model string have to change to

9000/800/rp4440

to make it working correctly.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

When selling the rp3400 and rp4400 series servers HP offered lower cost systems that only supported 1 or 2 CPU's.  HP would control the number of supported CPU's within firmware.  The model string data would show how many CPU's the system would support as Torsten shows.

If you later wanted to upgrade you purchased an upgrade that came with a license and password allowing you to upgrade the system without having to change any hardware (aside from the adding the new CPU's of course).

Another issue I recall is that if you upgraded a system to run PA-8900 CPU's you could not go back to the PA-8800 processors.  So, if you are running PA-8800 processors and the baseboard came from a system running PA-8900 processors, the board may not work.  This can be adjusted but not without assitance of HP.

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

Torsten and Robert,

I think I understand what you guys said. That is, (without model string modify) if I replace an rp4440's IO Baseboard with a used part, the rp4440 may  boot, but problems should be risen; with new part, it would not be boot; similiar situation would happen on an rp3440's case.

thank you for your reply!
