Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

You may have another problem with a used board (different serial number) - the system would have another systemID (see uname -a), some applications depend on this and will not run.

As said earlier, the rp3440 doesn't have this "problem", because you can set these values without "ss_update" (one time shot) by running "init" from the boot service menu (on a "blank" board only).

Hope this helps!

a board with factory defaults - no serial number etc set, just "blank".

Re: Is it necessary to SS_UPDATE when replacing an rp4440's I/O Baseboard?

For the rp4440: There is a little LED panel on the front of the System. It is where the power switch is. It has a small NVRAM chip on the board. It stores Serial# and model str data. If you buy a used Mainboard, ask for that LED board to be included as well. The new Itanium servers are all like this as well. I think it was a design left over from Compaq.

Or you can buy a chassis with no memory or CPU and swap your parts over. If you buy a "virgin" new board, you have one shot to input the serial# and model str.
