Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

Looks like a bad disk, please post

# model
# ioscan -fn

and have a look into roots mailbox for related messages.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

We are not having any disk errors anymore after replacing disks. All hardware is seen on the ioscan -funC. There are nolonger volume groups involved in the errors. Although NCR chip seems to be a common theme in the errors. We have also replaced the SCSI controller. Could this be an error due to RAM being bad? Is the NCR chip a chip on the motherboard?

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

One more point of contention. This only seem to happen when the server is performing it's most arduous of tasks, which would be our nightly database dumps. The dumps themselves seem to be fine, the size is comparable with previous dump sizes before these errors had started. This is the reason why it seems to either be a memory or main board issue. I am just hoping to find clarification.

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

Hi,

Do you have STM & EMS installed? Try posting the results from these commands:

# echo "sel dev all;info;wait;il"|/usr/sbin/cstm

(cut/paste:)

cstm<<-EOF
runutil logtool
rs
EOF

post the event log (if installed):

# tail -200 /var/opt/resmon/log/event.log

Hope this helps.

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

Neither of the utilities is installed on this UNIX. The initial post was straight from the syslog.log. Our system is a bit different it was reengineered for our specific needs. I am guessing the syslog is basically the same as the event viewer. Would you like to see the whole syslog/eventlog? Our syslog shows all events that occur on this server.

I have tailed the syslog and this only occurs when the system is performing the most strenuous of tasks. Which for our server as I have stated are the database dumps. We are running sybase 11.5 over HPUX 10.2, with a b2600 and an expansion chassis.

I hope this helps with any further thoughs on what the actual issue might be. The current idea is leaning toward a memory or motherboard error.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help in this matter.

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

Hi,

Well *something* related to bus 4 is causing the issue.

The syslog and event logs are different. The event log is more detailed as to what is happening with the hardware. If you're not is a position to install the tools or run ODE diags, options are limited to the "shotgun approach" and eliminating the controller and drives leaves the system module and system PCI I/O board or the external expansion chassis and it's components (maybe an intermittent external chassis power supply under load?).

A detailed analysis of the hardware is recommended before doing anything else.

See this thread about installing STM/EMS for 10.20 (Scot Bean's reply):

Who knows!

You never told the server model so far!

Hope this helps!

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

BTW:

There is an on-board SCSI chip. It controls the internal disks.

Check the Technical Reference manual:

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManu
al/lpv38329/lpv38329.pdf

Also see Chapter 5, according to the Block Diagram, the PCI I/O expansion module in main system is a 4-slot module. Bus 4 is located on this module.

BUS 4 External components
PCI I/O Expansion Module in system chassis

Hope this helps. If it does please see this:

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

Just to clarify; SLOT 4 is on the PCI I/O module. This may or may not be Bus 4, you'll need to post an ioscan -fnC disk so we can see how the system is configured.

Re: SCSI Ibolt errors

There may be a problem with c4t0d0 or c4t1d0, but most likely with the SCSI controller, the cable or the terminator. I would check cable and terminator first.

Hope this helps!
