Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
btlan4.c GSC 100BT Patch: PHNE_15414 (10.20) PHNE_15415 (11.0) / Dart 40 $Revision: 4.16 $ $Date: 98/06/17 14:06:46 $
When I tried to configure the NIC from SAM, I get the following messages:
"Configuration of Speed, Duplex and Autonegotiation are not supported with this version of the Network Interface driver. Please install the latest revision of the driver product/patch to enable this or contact your support personnel for further assistance."
So I tried to set the speed/duplex from lanadmin, this didn't work either.
I have installed the latest patch.
Anybody have any ideas what is wrong?
Thanks

Re: Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
You are using PHNE_15415, but I believe you will atleast need the patch PHNE_17660(the latest is PHNE_22461, with a dependencies on PHNE_18049 and PHNE_18075)
The patch description for PHNE_17660 says
/Begin/
SAM does not support altering speed (10 or 100Mbps) and duplex mode (half or full) settings on the interface
End/
Also this is a very good link for diagnosing lan card problems

Re: Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
I looked up the patches you mentioned, PHNE_17660 and PHNE_22461, they are for 11.0.
I checked the guide and the only thing I haven't tried is setting auto-negotiation.

Re: Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
can you tell us what patches do you have specifically for sam, arpa, lan.
you could do something like
swlist -l product |egrep -i "ARPA|lan|100|sam"
because there is no patch PHNE_15414 for 10.20 in the patch database.

Re: Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
On 10.20 you would atleast need the patch PHNE_18762(latest is PHNE_22216 with dependcies on PHKL_11352 and PHNE_18924).
Description of patch PHNE_18762 says
/Begin/
1. SAM does not support altering speed (10 or 100Mbps) and duplex mode (half or full) settings on the interface.
2. Applications (including lanadmin) receive 10 for 10Mbps or 100 for 100Mbps for the speed value in the ifSpeed field of the mib structure. lanadmin therefore displays 10 or 100 for the interface (link) speed.
3. 'lanadmin -x [nmid]' display does not indicate whether the card is running in auto-negotiation or manual mode.
4. lanadmin cannot alter the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size value of the interface.
5. Applications do not receive outbound traffic from the interface when they enable promiscuous mode on the interface.
6. Spinlock deadlock panics.
7. Unable to set the card to auto-negotiation mode by assigning "auto_on" to SPEED variable in /etc/rc.config.d/hpgsc100conf.
8. The actual link configuration does not reflect what is manually configured in /etc/rc.config.d/hpgsc100conf.
/End/

Re: Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
Were any of the patches installed after the drivers were installed?
Can you do a
swlist -a state -l fileset |egrep -v "config|\#"
(to check if any of fileset aren't configured)
Also can you do a
what /usr/sbin/lanadmin
and show its output

Re: Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
Hmm, that definitely is a problem, a bunch of critical patches are in installed state.
The first thing you can do(man swconfig for help)
swconfig \*
This would configure all the filesets on the system and then recheck the state of all the filesets
swlist -a state -l fileset |egrep -v "config|\#"
If everything shows up as configured then try changing your setting, if not you may have to reinstall the LAN/ARPA/SAM/dependency patches and reboot.
No problem about the help, these forums are for that purpose and if you appreciate the help, do assign the points ;)

Re: Unable to set speed/duplex of a J3514A NIC in a K Server
I'll reinstall the patches and see if that helps.
Hopefully, I can get time in the next day or two for a reboot. I'll let you know how it goes.
