Re: adding second CPU on HP3000 series 939-020
Unless you upgrade your 939 to a 959 or better, you cannot install more than 1 CPU on it.
Refer to the document Mr. Brown Jr. recommended for details on upgrading.

Re: adding second CPU on HP3000 series 939-020
I have read the manuel ,but there is something not very clear .as I have understood if I make the upgrade from 939-020 to 959-100 i need only to change the model string to 959-100 and I don't need any additional processor card or any hardware upgrade is that true?
in other way if I add another processor to the system after this upgarde i need only one processor card and i need to change the model string to 959-200 on the two cpu card (the first and the second to the same value 959-200 ) and the same for swcap ,can it be done like this ?? thanks in advance.

Re: adding second CPU on HP3000 series 939-020
Although I'm late in answering, I would suggest rather than upgrading in a class that is no longer supported by HP, look at going to a small 'N' class box. You get a faster processor, ability to go to larger and faster disc subsystems, supported hardware and software, at least until 2005.
Only caveat would be testing, software license ( third party and HP) upgrade costs, and of course it all depends on your business case.

Re: adding second CPU on HP3000 series 939-020
Based on this return credit description I found in an old ordering guide, you can upgrade your 929KS/030 to a 979KS/100 without a CPU swap. Just make sure you already have the bigger power supply (1700 KVA UPS) and not the smaller one (1250 KVA UPS). After that you can just add more cpu's.
A5854AN 001 - Return credit for 81 MHz, 1024/1024 KB cache 929KS/030 processor (no board returned on upgrades to a 939KS/030 chassis or a 979KS/100 chassis)
What is unknown is if HP will still do this.
