hardware doc for hp9000 g40

Hello all,

Could someone point me to the hardware docs for the G40? I've scoured the I but have not found anything.

This is a very old box, and i have a need to replace one of the hard disk becuase it's showing sign of failover, but don't know exactly which disk is failing. I know with device it is via IOSCAN but not sure which one physically.

Do you have external disks or internal only?

Pathes are calculated based on slot IDs for external disks for this servers.

You need to inspect the jumper settings on each disk to find a specific ID - remember, it's very old ...

I think both. I could see a SCSI2 card on the back of the server connection to, what i think, an external disk pack.

Does this server comes with internal SCSI controller? If so, do you know which phys path it usually is?

You have a built-in SCSI controller for internal disks (better: devices, because of the tape and CD), with a connector for external drives.

the disc in question is likely to be an internal disk.

the path 52.x.x is generally the internal devices on these older boxes.

It would also tie in with the path of the cd and dat drive which is normal. Unless the disks are external and attached to the standard external scsi port, not an extra HPPB scsi card.

But it looks like you will have 2 disks in one side of the chassis and 1 in the other. The C3010 is an old full height disk mech that weighs about 3kg.

you could just try and do a dd to the disk and see if the light flashes.(remove the front cover first)

The hardware path 52/... is the "multi function I/O card" in this system.

This single bus goes through both disk bays and ends on the external connector.

So nobody can say for sure if the disk is internal or external without looking at the connector - but most likely the disk is internal.

Now you need to check the jumpers for the SCSI ID.

Hi Hanh,

52.5.0 is reasonably likely to be an
internal hard drive, but that's not guaranteed.

IIRC, the G40 has room for two internal
hard drives, and they're usually (but
not always) configured as SCSI IDs 6 and 5.
Note, however, that the 52.x chain may
be continued out the rear of the box,
so simply saying "52.x" doesn't tell us
internal or external.

It's easy to access the internal hard drive
bay. After appropriate prep (backup, shutdown), use a Torx T-10 to undo the two
torx screws at the bottom front of the machine (you have to get down low to see
them). Pull off the front panel by pulling
out on the bottom, and then slide up a bit.

Inside should be a panel covering the
peripheral cage ... it has two Torx T-10
screws at the top. Undo them (they're captive, IIRC), and pull off the panel.

You can remove the peripheral cage by
lifting it up about a quarter inch, and then
pulling it out (you don't need a lot of force). I usually have a thick book in
front of the computer to rest the cage on,
to avoid stress on the SCSI and power cables.

You should now have access to the disk drives.

BTW, an easy way of determining if 52.5
is internal or external is to boot to the
offline diagnostics, disconnect the external
SCSI cable, and then run IOMAP. If 52.5
shows up, it's internal. If not, it's
external or dead.
