Can't get to BCH on 7420

I'm trying to get the BCH on a 7420 with no luck. The system has a single partition and cell, was running just fine before I did a shutdown -h 0 to Halt. Now I can't get it to boot again

I've powered down the cabinet, waited, powered back on, then waited, nothing.

I've reset the partition and waited, got nothing. I've booted the partition then waited, nothing. All the VFP numbers just sit there, nothing.

I've looked through the docs and it seems that a RS or BO on the partition should have caused the BCH to show.

any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: Can't get to BCH on 7420

I was able to get the thing to BCH but it required a complete Cabinet power down, then a reset of the MP, then once that was done, power ON of the Cabinet and the thing booted.

This can't be normal?

What could have been the problem here?

Re: Can't get to BCH on 7420

now I find that the only cell on the system is in BIB and has FAILURE DETECTED.

No matter what I do, I cannot get the cell to power on PE reports power OFF even after I tell it to go to ON.

The PS listing for the Cell is below, any ideas how to get this system booted?

Thanks,

My bad, here's the PS listing for the cell:

[nepsma01_remote] MP:CM> ps

Display detailed status of the selected MP bus device.

The following MP bus devices were found:

You may display detailed power and hardware status for the following items:

Re: Can't get to BCH on 7420

Javed,

I have had zero luck digging anything out of the sl menu.

All,

Had the site guy remove power from the unit, plug it back up, then the CELL comes up with NO FAILURE DETECTED and the machine boots normally.

Now, my question, what state can these things get into where the only solution is to physically remove power? I should be able to recover from any power issue via the MP, but this machine is the exception.

I tried everyhthing in PE, BO, RE, RS, and even used XD to kill/restart the MP. Nothing.

Is this simply BIB? But, wouldn't a BO clear a BIB flag and allow a boot?

If anyone can tell me how to dig details out of the logs to figure this out, please do and I'll try it.

Thanks,

Hi:

"Now, my question, what state can these things get into where the only solution is to physically remove power? I should be able to recover from any power issue via the MP, but this machine is the exception."

Many things, but one that stands out on your system is that the PDC (Firmware) is low and there were several power fixes including CELL Power On issues in newer firmware releases.

HTH,

Might want to catch up on assigning points. ;-)

Could be, yes, but that doesn't explain FAILURE state.

The release notes for firmware 4.1 indicate that if you're at a level below 3.2, extreme caution should be used. There is a reference to how important it is to read the 3.2 release notes to be sure not to render you machine unrecoverable. The warning indicates "failure to update FPGAs with 48V power on, followed by updating Firmware files with 48V power off" would be bad.

I looked through the online 3.2 release notes but didn't see anything about that.

Any pointers on updating the firmware from 3.0 to 4.1?

Thanks,

Re: Can't get to BCH on 7420

Hi,

did you try opening a hardware call with HP ?

if you are at older version of firmware , updating firmware is a good idea.

Re: Can't get to BCH on 7420

Well, it appears as though the firmware is actually up to date:

PDHC A.003.031 is part of Verxion 4.1 firmware.

Can you confirm this?

Why do you say my firmware is low?
