DLT drive makes K420 reboot when accessed

I have a refurb 420 that apparently was damaged in some way during a power outage in the datacenter.

After the machine was brought back up, it continually rebooted. We noticed SCSI errors in the rc.log and disconnected the SCSI tape drives. After a lot of investigation (replacing drives, cables and cards), we do not think it is a hardware issue. Could it be a driver issue?

As soon as we try to write the informix (ontape) backup to the DLT, the machine reboots. But, the DDS2 tape drive works fine. We just can't write the database backup to it because of the size.

The only other error we saw was when we ran stm. It said it could possibly be a driver issue (among others).

I have added the output from lsdev, ioscan and sam:

hpbest$/usr/sbin/lsdev -C tape

Re: DLT drive makes K420 reboot when accessed

The 10/0 bus is also connected to internal disks - do you have any installed?

What is your OS version?
Can you post a "swlist" and a "ioscan -fn"?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: DLT drive makes K420 reboot when accessed

WOW, 10.01 must be unsupported for at least 10 years now!
Forget to ask somebody about drivers - this is just too old!

You have mixed the tape drive with disks on the same bus - I would suggest to use another controller just for the tape.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: DLT drive makes K420 reboot when accessed

I would love to be able to upgrade these machines but, it is not possible at this time. :) They are being decommissioned as of Feb 09. So, I have to keep them up and running till then.

We have changed the drives, tapes, cables and the cards in the machine. We have also tried different connections and buses. The exact same thing happens every time we try to write to a DLT drive (either DLT4000D or DLT4000DC).

Any ideas why the DDS2 tapes would work but not the DLT?

That is another term for system crash. Until you get a crash dump, it will be impossible to tell what is bad. You may have a failed backplane in the K420, or a failure in the SCSI interface that causes the (very old) drivers to crash the kernel. Check if you have a ts99 file (10.01 is so old, I can't remember whether this file is created).

Re: DLT drive makes K420 reboot when accessed

You have a HSC expansion card with 4 F/W SCSI interfaces:

ext_bus 9 8/0 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE GSC add-on Fast/Wide SCSI Interface
ext_bus 10 8/4 c720 CLAIMED INTERFACE GSC add-on Fast/Wide SCSI Interface

Did you try to connect the tape drive there instead of the core SCSI?

IIRC there were some issues with some controller types and DLT drives in the past, but after all the years I can't remember more details.

Hope this helps!

Re: DLT drive makes K420 reboot when accessed

The machine is fine as long as you don't try to write to one of the DLT tape drives. The DDS2 tape drives work correctly. The tape drives, cables, SCSI "card", core I/O board and terminators have all been replaced. We even tried different DLT tape drives with different types of SCSI connections. The only thing left is the back plane. I will have the current sysadmin try that.
Thanks!
