Fibre channel driver received an interrupt from the adaptor indicating a LASER FAULT

I'm trying to restore from tape, and finding the above message continously scrolling down the screen. I've tried using a serial cable, but see the same error message, which prevents me from doing any work. Is there a patch / fix for this issue. The message I see is

Frame Manager Status Register : 0x050210D0
0/0/10/0/0 : Fibre Channel Driver received an interrupt indicating a LASER FAULT which is a link failure state

I've also changed fibre cables and also used another port, but still get the same error mesage.

Hi,

A laser fault indicates a hardware issue with the adapter. You will have to replace the fiber channel card at the slot 0/0/10/0/0.

You already confirmed it by changing the fiber cables.

The card is dead.

The laser is build into the card.

Recite the prayer for dead hardware and make arrangements to replace it.

I've seen this more often than not, on fibre channel adaptors on N Class / RP8400 Servers..

Is is just because the products have reached an end of life.. or is it just wear and tear..

One other possible solution (If you have an A5158A Card). If you have a spare, you can try swapping out the GBIC's (the lasers). You lift the metal band and pull out (note the orientation), and this can be done online.
The WWPN ans WWNN are hard coded to the card itself, so you won't have any problems with changed addressing.

Be very careful putting them back in though, as they are fragile.

Some of the other cards have removable GBIC's as well, but the older cards (A3740A and the like) do not.
