HP9000 N4000, A6829-60101 slot

Been doing unix for a bit more than 20 years. Unfortunately I recently inherited support for a couple HP systems. No training.  Have a dual-scsi card installed, which is supposedly compatible with the OS (11.11) and the server (9000 N4000).

Tried professor google for more than 3 hours, no luck.  I need to find out if the card is actually being seen after insf -e and ioscan -fn.  Cant figure out the slot location from ioscan info. System has one existing scsi for external connnections (on board), and an internal scsi controller, I would assume, since it has scsi disks. Output from ioscan is below. Any info on

1) if the card is visible.

2) how to translate the H/W path to card slots

would be greatly appreciated. Please help me stop reducing my follicle count, I cant afford to spare any more hair.

iwthp ioscan -fn

Re: HP9000 N4000, A6829-60101 slot

I am guessing you installed the card into PCI slot 6?  The two cards are shown as "unknown and unclaimed" here:

unknown    -1  0/2/0/0                 UNCLAIMED   UNKNOWN      PCI SCSI (10000021)
unknown    -1  0/2/0/1                 UNCLAIMED   UNKNOWN      PCI SCSI (10000021)

The A6829A card uses the c8xx SCSI driver, so that may not be loaded into your kernel.  Check using:

  # kmsystem | grep c8xx

If you see...

c8xx                N                   -

...then you need to add the driver.  To do this:

   - Start the SAM utility:  # sam

   - Navigate to Kernel Configuration and then to Drivers.

   - Search for the c8xx entry.

   - Highlight this using the space bar (assuming you are using a terminal CLI)

   - Use the tab key to get to the menu and use the arrows to select Actions and then Add Driver to Kernel

This will modify the kernel and prompt a reboot.   Check using # ioscan -fn after the reboot.

If that driver is already loaded, then you may have a card problem.

The hardware paths for your PCI slots are based on the rope (data paths) IDs, so there is no real methology that can be used to convert from path to slot.  Here is the path info for the N4000:

Left I/O Backplane (rear facing)
Slot 6    0/2/0
Slot 5    0/10/0
Slot 4    0/8/0
Slot 3    0/12/0
Slot 2    0/4/0
Slot 1    0/5/0

Right I/O Backplane (rear facing)
Slot 12    1/0/0
Slot 11    1/8/0
Slot 10    1/2/0
Slot 9    1/4/0
Slot 8    1/10/0
Slot 7    1/12/0

Re: HP9000 N4000, A6829-60101 slot

That's one of the best responses I've ever seen to a question. I'll be trying that tonight as time permits.
