Is a rp7420 cell compatible with a rp8420

Hi,

We need to move a cell from a rp7420 to a rp8420, I was wondering if it's possible?

the rp8420 cells have PN:A6913-60001
the rp7420 cells have PN:AB536-04005

From what I read in the specs of the rp7420 looks like they are the same:

The HP 9000 rp7420 (8 processor module slots) and HP 9000 rp8420 (16 processor module slots) servers share the same cell board.

Can someone please confirm if you can?

They use the same cell boards
go look at Partsurfer.hp.com:

Under rp8420:
A6913-69206 Processor cell board assembly - Includes four 900MHz PA-RISC 8800 dual core processors, does not include memory

Under rp7420:
A6913-69206 Processor cell board assembly - Includes four 900MHz PA-RISC 8800 dual core processors, does not include memory

If you want to swap a board make sure it has the same type of CPU and the same firmware installed!

Hope this helps!

I have used them, the other way round, I used a rp8420 on a rp7420, they are the same.

As Torsten said, you can't mix processors on the same npartition.

If for example your npartition has a cell with PA8800 you can't add a cell with PA8900 processors
Windows?, no thanks

Re: Is a rp7420 cell compatible with a rp8420

I looked up in the server specs:

The ability to mix processor speeds within a chassis is supported (but processors within a cell or partition must be of the same speed). PA 8800 and PA 8900 may be mixed within the same chassis provided they are placed in different hardware partitions
Windows?, no thanks

@Daniel:

Mixing CPUs applies to superdomes, but I really doubt this is supported on any midrange system.

Hope this helps!
