Second CPU in rp3440-4

I have an HP rp3440-4 server (A7137)and want to know how easy it is to install a secondary CPU. My invoice shows that I have one HP srv rp34x0 1Hz PA-8800 dual core CPU (AB354A) installed in the server. We want to install a second CPU but I don't know if this server came with one pre installed and I just need to get the key or if I need to install a second CPU.

Is there a way to find out if the second CPU is installed while the server is running?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Second CPU in rp3440-4

Just do this

# echo "sel dev 1;info;wait;il"|cstm

and you receive something similar to this:

CPU Information:
Number of CPUs in the system = 4

CPU Map
cpu -----------------------------------------
slot | 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 |
state|caM |ca |ca |ca | | | | |
-----------------------------------------
| 08 | 09 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 | 14 | 15 |
state| | | | | | | | |
-----------------------------------------

This will show you how many CPUs are there.

The rp3440 has always dual-core CPUs, either PA8800 or PA8900. Some systems were sold with 1 dual core CPU, 1 core disabled.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Second CPU in rp3440-4

Shalom,

You have to shut the server down to install the second CPU. That part can not be put in with the power on.

The install is straightforward though I prefer to let HP hardware do it.

Re: Second CPU in rp3440-4

Here is the information and it looks like I only have one Duel core CPU installed in my server. I will be ordering a second one today. Anything I should know about ordering a new CPU so I don't get the wrong one. After I get the new CPU do I need to contact HP to get a key to be able to use the CPU?

CPU Information:
Number of CPUs in the system = 2

Re: Second CPU in rp3440-4

hi,

as you have the rp3440 you should just be able to add the second dual core cpu.

you need to make sure you get the same speed and specification cpu to match what you already have.

you should be able to get this info from the infolog tool of stm

you wont need a lic key to enable th cpu to work, it just will.

heres a doc on with a section on cpu upgrades in it. read it carefully. If your careful you wont have a problem, but you do need a special tool to install it. well its a long allen key in reality, but hp's special tool has the torx on the other end to tighten it down.
make sure the socket is fully open and then lock it afterwards, and remember to connect the power cable up.

(to be truly legal about it i believe you should also buy 2 more lic for hpux though as its licenced by cpu, but no lic keys to add)
