Upgrade RP3410, RP3440, RP4440 to Itanium

Hi Experts,

Please tell me whether we can upgrade the PA RISC servers RP3410, RP3440 and RP4440 to Itanium cell boards. Please tell me whether these servers support the upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Upgrade RP3410, RP3440, RP4440 to Itanium

rp3410 and rp3440 use the same chassis like rx2600 and rx2620, but there is IMHO no upgrade.

The rp4440 can be upgraded to rx4640 (if still available).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

hi,

in your case i would buy a new server and transfer the CPU license.

rp4440 -> rx4640 is a fairly easy upgrade, just changing one dipswitch and swapping the CPUs. The rp34xx -> rx2620 involves swapping the system board, so not as easy.

The problem with either solution is that you will have to reload HP-UX after the upgrade, so it may be more effective to purchase a new server in order to avoid lengthy downtime.

Re: Upgrade RP3410, RP3440, RP4440 to Itanium

Hi Josh,
The problem with this is that the system board may not have the correct firmware settings installed, such as the model string and prod/serial number. Once the CPU is swapped over the system may not get past BCH due to this and then HP would be needed to program the values.

Just my 2c from past experience.
