is the server HP9000 still a performante one

Hi, I hope that I'm in the righte place,
I work as a system administrator (I've just got the job for that I dont have a lot of information dealing with servers administration)
the lab / office (where I work) has a HP9000 server .
after some researchs through the internet I've seen that it's old server (actually very old one). I think a nowadays PC is more performent than HP9000
Is HP9000 still exisit in the market
PLZ, what can we do with such server, which application can we install on it ?

thx MSM,

Hello,

can you say what is the model of the server you are describing ? HP9000 platform still runs a lot of critical applications that require performance. So generally, yes HP9000 servers are performant.

If your server is really old then you might be right stating that today's PC can outperform it.

Hi MSM,

as Jozef mentioned lot of custommer use this servers, for real application.

But in your case, you should exactly know which model do you have and the exact configuration, them you ( or the itrc memmbers ) will be able to say, which OS version could run on this HW.

Thx for answers,
Model HP9000 E45
caracteritics: 1pro 7100LC, 80Mhz, 256Mo (RAM), 8Go (Hard disk)
OS : HP-UX

used to share: Xmgr, Xfig, Latex and NAG

I asked these questions because I've seen that its performance doesn't satisfy users

hi,

that is not a big configuration like a SuperDome of HP 9000 series. So i think you should check if there is possible upgrade the CPU and memmory.

Which HP-UX version is there running ?

Yes, this is very old.
Note: HP now only sells Integrity servers for HP-UX.

Re: is the server HP9000 still a performante one

E45 was designed as a low-end server in mid-1990s. It's about 25x smaller than a modern basic PC server in CPU speed, memory and disk space. A PC server like a Proliant DL380 G5 even in its basic configuration would certainly be orders of magnitude faster than an E45.

HP-UX is still strong in large servers and situations where high I/O throughput is needed.

HP9000 servers still exist, but the choices are rather limited, because HP-UX is moving to Itanium CPUs. HP-UX servers with Itanium CPUs can run HP9000 software using an emulator built in the HP-UX OS (Aries). This causes some performance loss, but that is insignificant in your case because the modern CPUs are *so* much faster.

You can replace your aging E45 with a new HP-UX server if you wish, but a cheap PC server with Linux OS could also do the job if you don't want to spend much money.

Your software:

Xmgr:
http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Xmgr/
(available as source code for all Unix-like systems, and as pre-built binaries for some, including HP-UX and Linux)
http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Grace/
(descendant of Xmgr, if you want to upgrade)

Xfig and Latex: available for free, standard in all modern Linux distributions.

NAG:
http://www.nag.co.uk/
(looks like programming libraries... available for *many* kinds of Unix-like systems, including HP-UX and Linux)
