powertrust II mr 'spare' com port

Hello,

Does anyone know what the 'spare' com port on a Powertrust II MR is used for? I am using the primary com port for monitoring and would like to also use the spare port for a 2nd computer. I tried connecting to spare instead but I could not get a signal from it. I prefer not to use the client/server UPS Manager II software since if I shutdown the server then the client doesn't know the status of the ups.
