User licensing

I am not sure what user licensing in HP-UX 11.0 means? What's the difference
between a 2 user license and an 8 user license? What are the limitations? Does
2 user license mean no more than 2 concurrent user can telnet into the server?

I believe that a 2 user lic. means only 2 direct connections will be allowed to
the system. One connection is the ethernet lan card and the other is a direct
connect serial port or console. You can have as many connections as you want
if they are all via the network.

Thank you for your response. Why and when would I need 8/16/32/unlimited user
licenses? I am new to HP-UX, and am tring to understand how things work in
HP-UX world.

The number of user licenses you would need on your system is a legal
requirement, that says if you are going to have, for example, between 17 and 32
concurrent users at any one time, then you should purchase a 32 user license.

I would recommend you speak to your local HP Sales Office for a possible better
clarification on this.

The user licenses refer to the number of connections not the number of users.

Some of our systems have hundreds of concurrent users but all via the ethernet.

You require more than a 2 user license if you have additional RS-232 or X.25
ports for instance and they are being used for user access.

Typically the standard 2 users are the console and the ethernet card.
