3PAR - Can I safely assign all usable CPG space to a FPVV?
Dear all,
we are running a 3PAR 8200 that currently has 59% of its SSD space allocated:
Our SSD CPG shows usable space of 4.416GB:
We are only using fully provisioned volumes. Can I safely assign all usable CPG space to a new volume despite that the RAW SSD will reach 100% then?
I once have heard that the 3PAR will stop IO if the RAW capacity will reach over 95%. Is that true or not? The only hint in the documents I found is that if CPGs are overprovisioned, writes to TPVV or snapshots will fail if no space is available anymore. I haven't found hints that state we cannot allocate all usable CPG capacity for FPVV however.
ThanksMichael

Re: 3PAR - Can I safely assign all usable CPG space to a FPVV?
Hi Sambell,
If you are provisioning FPVVs, you can provision all the space available on the CPG, and host IOs will not fail.
However if there are snapshots / TPVVs available on the array, and if the array doesnt have any space for the TPVVs to grow, then the host IOs for that VV might fail / respective snapshot might go into stale state.
As a best practice, its recommended to keep atleast 10% free space.
Thanks and Regards,
