Best practice for 3par san storage allocation

Can we use upto 100% of the storage capcity of 3PAR storage or upto howmuch we can allocate avoiding any performance issue.

The storage is being used on a highly critical OLTP system.

Re: Best practice for 3par san storage allocation

Hello KMitra,

If you don't have any allocation limit set, you will not face performance issues up to around 99% of the allocation. If the utilization is much closer to full, performance may degrade as the chunklets can't move freely. So, a utilization level close to 100% is not recommended. You will be on the edge of an outage scenario where as soon as the allocation reaches 100%, the host writes will fail.

The best practices for OLTP system volumes will be:

1. Use thin provisioning for efficient space allocation.

2. Use SSD tier for OLTP volumes for best performance. Additionally, for the volumes in SSD tier, you can enable space saving features 'deduplication' and 'compression'.

3. Set the allocation warning between 85% to 95% and increase the capacity as soon as the warning levels are hit.
