EVA2000 to 3PAR 8200 Migration

We have a EVA2000 with SAS connections to a c3000 HP Chassis, and we need to move over to a new 3PAR 8200 which is Fibre Channel.

Two servers are VMware ESXi v5.5 Host. We also have a few Windows 2008 Servers that we will need to migrate.

What are different options that we could use to provide a quick and reliable migration?

Thought about putting a FC Switch in the c3000, but unable to due to need both the LAN & SAS switches.

Restore from tape is an option, but this would be very time comsuming.

Thanks,

-Swin

Re: EVA2000 to 3PAR 8200 Migration

Any possiblity of shutting down the EVA2000 & c3000, and replacing the SAS Switches & Mezzazine Cards with FC Switches & Mezzazine Cards, and having everything work afterwards?

Re: EVA2000 to 3PAR 8200 Migration

there must be something wrong.
there never was an eva2000. all eva's were fc connected (some + iscsi, sas only at the backend).
is it a msa2000?
what generation?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

You are correct. It is an MSA2000. Looks like a Gen1. Shows "HP StorageWorks MSA2000 Model 2012sa".

Re: EVA2000 to 3PAR 8200 Migration

It's Simple

You have to connect the ESX and Windows Server with HBA to 3PAR anyway.

For ESX you can simply do an Online Storage vMotion with vCenter.

For the Windows Server present the 3PAR Volumes, do a Restore & robocopy /mirr, than swap the Drive Letters.

If you don't connect the old servers to new storage and vice versa, you can only do a backup / restore. You cannot transfer the data between these 2 storages.

Hope this helps!

Re: MSA2000 G1 to 3PAR 8200 Migration

The trick is getting the c3000 Servers on the Fibre Channel, since I only have the LAN and SAS Mezzazine Cards, I am unaware on how to connect it to Fibre Channel as well.

That is my main questions. How can I get this connected to Fibre Channel as well at SAS & LAN?

Re: MSA2000 G1 to 3PAR 8200 Migration

So to be clear:

You have an c3000 Blade Center and connected a P2000 by SAS Switch.

You got a new 3PAR with FC and connected to ??? ... some new Servers oder Blade Center, or to the same/old c3000?

If new Server, it is as Torsten say: Backup and Restore.

Or with ESX and Hyper-V you can do also a Storage vMotion over LAN.

Or use Veeam Replication.

Or use Robocopy.

Anyway in this Configuration LAN is the only Media for both Worlds.

Re: MSA2000 G1 to 3PAR 8200 Migration

OK. That is what I figured. I was hoping I could put FC in MSA2000 and c3000 to connect to the new C7000 with the FC 3PAR.

Thanks for everyone's Advice!
