HP 3PAR V400 ESX Persona 11

All:

We are having some performance problems on an ESX Cluster.  I noticed that the new 3PAR OS 3.1.2 has a new Persona "11" for ESX 4 and 5.  We have been using Persona 6 for ESX.  Is it still good?  should I change the Personal from 6 to 11?  Can you do that "on the fly" for an existing Cluster?

Re: HP 3PAR V400 ESX Persona 11

Hi,

You can leave the original persona for VMware... However if you want ALUA connections and/or want to use Peer Persistence then you need to change the persona to 11...

To change this you will need to reboot the VM host... By using VMotion (if you have the license) the cluster can stay online by changing host per host...

Thanks! In what manual is this documented? What is "ALUA"? What is "Peer Persistence"?

Re: HP 3PAR V400 ESX Persona 11

And do I have to coordinate these with my VMware Team?  Do they have to do anything?

Re: HP 3PAR V400 ESX Persona 11

Hi,

ALUA stands for Asymmetric Logical Unit Access and is a SCSI related feature...

Good explanation can be found here

http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2009/09/29/whats-that-alua-exactly/

Peer Persistence for VMware makes it possible to export not only the active volume but also the RC copy volume to the VMware servers. Normally you have 4 active paths, now you will see 4 active and 4 standby paths, 8 paths in total. By exporting both volumes at the same time, no rescan whatsoever must be executed on the VMware host servers when a failover of the Remote Copy group occurs...

No, the VMware team must not make any changes from their side. The only thing they will see is more paths to any 3PAR volume...

Re: HP 3PAR V400 ESX Persona 11

I asked our "HP guy".  He said that if I change the Persona from 6 to 11 on an existing server, that the server has to be rebooted to take advantage of hte new Persona.  We can't do that (too many outages, etc.).
