HPE 3PAR 8400 2N - Storage Upgrade

Planning to go for storage upgrade.

Currently have HPE 3PAR 8400 2N with 12 SSD and 12 HDD.

Need to have additional 24 1.8TB+SW 10K SFF HDD. I understand 1 enclosure is required to achieve this.

Another query is around the CPG. Do i need to create a new CPG for the new disks being installed in the enclosure ?

Been through this link https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04607918

Any links/documentation around the same would be really helpful.

While you don't say what you currently have, you imply you already have 12 1.8TB HDDs. If that is the case, at a minimum I would recommend

  1. Add the shelf
  2. Install and 'admithw' the disks
  3. Run 'tunesys' to re-distribute the existing HDD storage across all 36 HDDs

and only after that start allocating more storage from the HDD CPGs.

It would be better to work with your local HPE PointNext Services specialists and add step
1.5 relocate half of the SDDs to the new second shelf.

Again, assuming the new disks are (close to?) the same size as the original HDDs. you would not need to change the CPGs.

The HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage Concepts Guide is a good place to start reading.

Hi Ashish, Can you please specify existing '12 HDDs' are what type (FC or NL)?

If the new disks you are planning to add are different type (SSD, FC or NL) or they differ in rotation speed (7.2K, 10K, 15K etc ), you need to create new CPG for them. Hope you find this article useful.

Hi Sheldon & sbhat09

Thanks for your responses.

I missed the information on the exisitng disk type. Yes they are same

HPE 3PAR 8000 1.8TB+SW 10K SFF HDD

In this case I have 12 of these at the moment and planning to add another 24.

Hi Ashish,

They can be part of the same CPG then.
