4 x rp7420 or 2 x rp8420 versus a SuperDome with 64 CPUs

Our needs are basically simple high availability (can take a few hours of downtime). We started off with a SuperDome since 3 years ago, it was the only HP footprint that can go beyond 16 cpus. But with the rp7420 and the rp8420 I believe we can get by - with the rp8420 serving environment needs that will have requirements beyond 16 cpus (up to 32).

In terms of acquistition costs - will the rp7420/8420 (same total CPU count and memory) be any cheaper than the 'Dome? How about maintenance? Will it be cheaper for the rp machines?

Nelson,

Have a look at the HP Enterprise Configurator web site here:
http://h30099.www3.hp.com/configurator/

This site allows you to configure and see the pricing on all types of machines. Now the pricing is HP Retail pricing (no discounts applied) but you should be able to get a good idea of costs.

I find this site VERY VERY handy for budget purposes.

Good luck.
