5470 network install?

Hey;

I'm trying to do the initial load on a refurbished 5470. The thing doesn't have a cd/dvd and no OS on the disks. So, I'm trying a lan install; however, I can't seem to get it to find a network.

From the boot menu, I've tried:

boot lan install
boot lan.${ip} install

the thing crashes then comes back to the boot menu.

"sea" shows what looks like three disks (random access media) none of which are where I'd expect the lan card to be.

I then went into the info menu and found the core/lan card at 0/0/0/0 so I tried:

boot 0/0/0/0 install

with the same result.

Can a 5470 *be* booted from the network? If so, any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for any hints/tips/suggestions.

Re: 5470 network install?

Hey;

I should add that the ${ip} referenced in

boot lan.${ip} install

is the ip address for the boot helper that I've configured...

Sorry for any resulting confusion.

Re: 5470 network install?

PA-RISC systems - requires lots of stretching of the error-filled DIMM memory... Is there something configured on the lan that will assign the thing an IP address? (bootp/dhcp) I presume the helper is configured to forward to a subnet where there is an Ignite server?

Sorry no better specifics - I presume you've already tried the Ignite manuals that at least at one point were on docs.hp.com?

Also, you might try sniffing traffic to/from your rp5470's boot NIC.

If all else fails, you can sometimes have good luck with installing on another system, of similar if not identical config, and moving the disc.

Of course, were this a contemporary Integrity system, there would be the dbprofile command to allow you to give it an IP, netmask, gateway, server IP and bootfile without need of DHCP support :)

Re: 5470 network install?

Hey;

The boothelper also assigns it an IP address, netmask, and gateway. I've had this work before on newer systems - I'm just not 100% sure the 5470 is new enough to support network booting.

If anyone could confirm that one way or the other, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again.

Re: 5470 network install?

I cannot recall the rp5470 not supporting lan boot, but of course that does not mean it did support it :( There have been issues in the past on various platforms where the IODC/PDC/m o u s e had bugs related to lan boot, which were resolved via firmware updates - so it might also be good to compare the FW revs on your rp5470 with the latest and greatest. Of course if you have no CD/DVD drive there is the bootstrap issue... which takes us back to perhaps booting from a disc installed-to in another system.

Hi Doug,

Yes it works on the rp5470 (but you've got to have the ignite server set up correctly first):

Re: 5470 network install?

Heh;

Well, that's depressing. It must be a firmware thing then. I search for bootable devices and it never sees/metions a lan. Unfortunately, without a cd or an OS on a disk, I'm at a bit of loss as to how to get the firmware updated.

At any rate, thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

Re: 5470 network install?

Hi Doug,

Just curious;

What did "search lan install" report back with?

What f/w version is your GSP and PDC?

Rgds,
