AC POWER FAILURE - running on UPS battery

We are encountering these numerous messages in one of our server HP-UX 9000/800 L Class:

Apr 11 10:09:42 mmds1 /usr/lbin/ups_mond[2158]: /usr/lbin/ups_mond: UPS /dev/tty
0p1 AC POWER FAILURE - running on UPS battery
Apr 11 10:09:42 mmds1 /usr/lbin/ups_mond[2158]: If power is not returned within
previously configured time period, your system will automatically go to graceful
shutdown.
Apr 11 10:09:44 mmds1 /usr/lbin/ups_mond[2158]: /usr/lbin/ups_mond: UPS /dev/tty
0p1 OK: AC Power back on
Apr 11 10:09:44 mmds1 /usr/lbin/ups_mond[2158]: /usr/lbin/ups_mond: AC Power to
all recognized, system critical UPS's OK! System will not shutdown.

Questions:
1. Will this alarm cause a system panic or system reboot if not attended to?
2. Is the replacement of the 5.5 kVA UPS the solution here?

Thanks in advance.

Re: AC POWER FAILURE - running on UPS battery

well apparently you have a main power failure and the server is running on UPS battery and it's giving a warning that it will shutdown. it will not panic but it will shutdown.. and if you have a database running that will probably need to be shut before the shutdown... so you should check ur main power connections, not the UPS.

Re: AC POWER FAILURE - running on UPS battery

if you have resmon installed on ur HP-UX u can check /var/adm/resmon/logs/event.log it should give u a more detail of hardware and power failures.

Re: AC POWER FAILURE - running on UPS battery

hi,

your system is ok as long as the UPS is.

it looks like you keep loosing power to the server and the batteries in the ups are keeping it up, however it has been configured to shutdown should you not rectify the power problem.

check the status of the power supply/ies in the gsp.

login to gsp and issue the ps command to display the status of the installed psu's. and how many you have.

you may need to replace one or more if the input supply is good
