hello, I have obtained an HP 9000 D class server. it didnt come with any cd's and I want to load an operating system. I have tryed a linux distribute, and got an error message.

Main Menu: Enter command > BO 8/16/5.2
Interact with IPL (Y, N, or Cancel)?> N
Booting...
Boot IO Dependent Code (IODC) revision 144
IPL error: bad LIF magic.
Error Reading IPL

I think this is because the distribute is i386, but I digress, dose anyone know of a linux distribute that will work

Hi,
Sorry, you can boot D machine only from special boot media. This might be either CORE-OS CD or a bootable tape from any R or D computer.
I suppose, you can boot an Itanium machine from LINUX CD, but not PA-RISC

You cannot boot/inistall linux on a D clss HP 900 machine .

D class only recognises an HPUX operating system . You have to look for an HPUX CD which says Core OS or install CD .

how might I obtain a 'Core OS' cd, is it expensive???

To answer the question about the cost of HP-UX, in a word...YES. It is expensive, for the individual just looking to utilize an old HP PA-RISC server, buying HP-UX is probably prohibitively expensive.

Your first post talks about trouble loading Linux and, as you correctly guessed, this is because you can't use binary files intended for i386 architecture on a PA-RISC system.

However, there is some good news (and I don't mean that I saved a bundle on my car insurance...) There's a version of Linux built just for PA-RISC systems. Here's a link to get you started:

I've downloaded this version of Linux (Debian 3.0, aka "woody") and installed it on a couple of old HP workstations. One caveat -- I don't know if a FWD SCSI driver was ever released for this o/s, and your D box probably has all FWD SCSI drives.

Michael,

I poked around some more on the PA-Linux site and noted that the lack of an FWD SCSI driver appears to be focused on the 700-series workstations. Since the D-series uses a different FWD controller (I'm pretty sure), you might be able to use the FWD drives with this Linux port.

Also, I just downloaded a newer set of Linux images for HPPA from the Debian site (actually, from a mirror). Here's a link:

Click on the "from the internet" link, then the "mirrors" link, followed by the "CD images download page" link and finally the "Download CD images using HTTP or FTP" link, then select a suitable mirror site.
