CPU Move from RP5470 to RP5430 - Possible?
I have got two HP-UX boxes:
An RP5470 and an RP5430
Both boxes are running large Oracle DBs on external disk arrays.
The 5470 is being replaced by a beafier machine, but the 5430 will remain.
The 5470 has 4xCPUs while the 5430 has only 2.
I could migrate the RP5430 system onto the RP5470 system, but this is a non-trivial task in order to make use of an extra 2 CPUs.
I'm not keen on using Ignite to create a Golden image and pushing that to the 5470,so, my question is:
Can I take two CPUs from the 5470 and plug them into the 5430?
Looking at the hardware specs, it's not clear if I can remove two CPUs from the 5470 and plug them into the 5430 (the specs suggest that all 4 CPUs exist in the 5430, but 2 of them (1 and 3) are disabled.
Is it possible to convert my 5430 into a 4 CPU box?
Any help or pointers would be much appreciated (I assign points! ;-)
Kind regards,
Andy Bruce

Re: CPU Move from RP5470 to RP5430 - Possible?
I think this is your lucky day.
Both 5470 and 5430 use compatible processors, meaning either of those two procs work on either machine.
PA-RISC 8700 processors, 875MHz cpu with 2.25MB integrated cache
A6152A
PA-RISC 8700 processors, 750MHz cpu with 2.25MB integrated cache
A6805A
As far as you have the xtra slots on for the procs in the 5430 you are not supposed to have any problems.
Regards,
Jaime.

Everything has to be the same, including clock speed.
I believe both boxes require cpu's in pairs.

Re: CPU Move from RP5470 to RP5430 - Possible?
The RP5430 Box is a two processor system, you cannot plug the CPU's from your RP5470 (in fact you can do that, there are slots inside, but the system will not recognize them). The only thing you can do is upgrade the RP5430 to an RP5470 (very stupid, you already have one RP5470!).

Re: CPU Move from RP5470 to RP5430 - Possible?
I would suggest using Ignite's make_tape_recovery to migrate from the 5430 to the 5470, though you seem hesitant to do so. You could continue to run on the 5430 while re-building the 5470 and cut over when you're sure you've got everything right.

Sell the 2 54's on e-bay and get an extra one of the beafier servers. Sorted! ;o))

Looks like I'll have migrate the 2 CPU system onto the 4 CPU box.. :-(
Cheers folks.
