Can Customer Perform HBA/NIC Installs/De-Installs on N-Class/rp74xx Machines?

We've maintenance and support but not to the level that we cna just ask HP to perform FC-HBA/NIC installs and de-installs.

But can we actually do these ourselves and not pose problems to whatever warranties or support contracts?

Re: Can Customer Perform HBA/NIC Installs/De-Installs on N-Class/rp74xx Machines?

I have installed these numerous times and never had a problem with HP support.

I installed a G-bit card in a N4000 a couple of weeks ago. HP shouldn't care as long as you don't break anything in the process.

If you were to break something or damage the machine, then that may be a different story.....

In the shops I have worked before, all of the HW purchase come with the installation service. Not sure if they had to pay anything more for it. You know in large corporations, this is something oblivious to us UNIX guys :-)

As long as you have your ESD strap on, I dont see a problem with this.

Yes Nelson,

It is however covered under some hardware service contracts. I always favored not doing it but have done it a few times. I was warned about violating service contracts but never had any issues with subsequent service on many machines I did self installs on.

Re: Can Customer Perform HBA/NIC Installs/De-Installs on N-Class/rp74xx Machines?

I routinely change parts on my boxes and probably > 95% of my service calls are POP's. (Parts Only Problem). HP just sends out parts to replace my on-hand spares. Only in rare cases do I allow the HP Mr Goodwrenches to touch my boxes and certainly to never do more than install the parts and possibly configure a systemboard. From that point, I always take over any of the OS related functions. You should note that most cards come with installation instructions so the ability for the customer to perform maintenance is implicit. For the parts you mention, the procedures are trivially simple.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
