Comparison between rp4440 and rp7410
My company is planning to get new hardware to replace the current N-class system with MCSG. Environment is to run Oracle Financial & RDBMS in 1 st node and Informix RDBMS in 2 nd node with MCSG.
We are looking at rp7410 initially but the sales recommended rp4440. They said that rp4440 (CPU 1GHz) is using latest technology (PA-8800) and rp7410 (CPU 875MHz) is using old technology (PA-8700).
Configuration for rp4440 is:
(1) 2xDual core PA-8800 1GHz CPU (total 4 CPU)
(2) Memory 8GB
Configuration for rp7410 is:
(1) 4xPA-8700 (875MHz) CPU
(2) Memory 8GB
How to go about comparing the two model of servers?
Thanks in advance,
YC

Re: Comparison between rp4440 and rp7410
I think everyone has explained the differences but my question would be which server is fastest as both appear to be same spec apart from CPU's
my other consideration in choosing which system to purchase would be peformance/cost
hopefully someone can add to this.
:-) John.

Re: Comparison between rp4440 and rp7410
Wonder why the cost of rp7410 (PA8700+) is much more than rp4440 (PA8800)?
Is there any hidden information that HP doesn't want to disclose?
PS: These questions were asked by my management.
Rgds,
YC

Re: Comparison between rp4440 and rp7410
r they offering you 2 cell boards on both the servers? ask them first, as cell boards do cost quite a fair bit, i.e.
(1) rp4440 -> 1xPA8800 and 4GB on each cell board
(2) rp7410 -> 2xPA8700 and 4GB on each cell board
also, i believe each licence, i.e. MirrorUX, Online JFS and OS are charged based on CPUs.
regards.
(p.s. some points for us would be nice)

Re: Comparison between rp4440 and rp7410
1. Check/Ask the estimated OLTP/TPC perf of both the systems.
2. Check/Ask the SPEC perf of both the processors PA-8700+ and PA-8800 and compare 1 core to 1 core perf.
2. Check the System, Memory and I/O bandwdith
4. Check # of I/O slots and speed (PCI, PCI-X)etc...
All this will give you the information and data to make a conscious choice as far as perf is concerned.
Then put the price and get the price-to-perf ratio (your internal yardstick)to decide.
"How much are you willing to spend, to get what?" will answer your doubts.

Anil

Re: Comparison between rp4440 and rp7410
Part II :
1. apart from the reqd load today, does the server have enough in-box capability to handle your future load ?
2. Support roadmap for PA-8800 will be better and longer for future upgrades.
3. can you then inbox upgrade to PA-8900 in future (it may not be possible in pa-8700+ servers)
These additonal info should help you further to decide with confidence.
All the best.
Anil
