Console and External Monitor on a D360 Server

Greetings all,

I take the opportunity in hand to ask you guys after searching for answers many hours in various news groups and forums here.

History:

I have an old D360 server running HP/UX B11.04 + VVOS 4.x. I suspect that i did something long time ago (it is one of my test servers) with the console port. If my memory serves me right i did not have access to the console port at the time but only to a connected screen. I made some research on the internet and found out how to connect the console port. And i works! Today when i booted up the old 'lady' i noticed that console access is the 'only' thing that i have and no extnernal monitor access.

My question to you guys out there is, how to i disable or enable the console port so that i can use a monitor again. Using both would be a nice scenario but if not i would prefer the monitor.

Hi Pierre,

AFAIR the system has a serial console normally . If you have the appropriate graphics card (installed in the turbo slot = recommended in your type of D-Class), you can have a graphics console.

You need to enable the X-server for this device. Edit the /etc/dt/config/Xservers file and remove the "#" in the line

# Local local@console /usr/bin/X11/X :0

(usually the last line)

Use "ioscan -fn" to locate the HW-path of your graphics card. Be sure to include the graphics driver "graph3" into the kernel.

Reboot, stop at BCH, go to COnfigure menu and set the console path to the graphics device (HW-path, e.g. 10/12.x).

If you reset the system now, your console will be the graphix device and no longer the serial terminal.

Take care of the old lady ;-)

I have checked and verfied your comments and it seems like i have them (see below).

Another thing, when i boot the machine and only when i have the console attached i can see my 'external' display showing off 'Remote' with an * on it. And 'Display' and 'Auto LF'. Is there something else that i am missing here. My attached keyb seems to be 'dead'.

Remote = Remote Management / AP Connectors and Switch. For HP to dial into your internal modem remotely. Its also a UPS terminal connection. There's a switch on the card. Normal / Service. Service is for remote use and this switch displays the messagge "REMOTE" on your LCD when set to service.

The PS/2 mouse connector is closest to the outside. The keyboard is closest to the middle.

10/12.0 is right.

How ever, i did not solve my problem. I have even gone to the un-practical solution of re-installaing the server but without any success in getting life in my external monitor. I can only view through a console. Darn, if i knew what i once did.

So, if someone else feel like contributing with a 'crazy' idea on how to solve this i am open for suggestions. It is after all an 'old' lady just being brought back to life for testing.

Did you use the turbo slot for the card?

Did you look in the HSC slot for a grapics console port. It has to be there. Also, I thought you couldn't get the console terminal to display? Can you run an ioscan and paste it in?

Hey Guys,

Thanks for both of your answers and sorry for a late answer. A short pre-summer break needed.

I was wrong in machine model, it's a D380 and nothing else. And YES my console port works but the External Monitor that does not. Sorry for this.

When i boot the machine with or without a cabel attached to the console port i can see on my monitor (external) one 8 yellow boxes at the bottom of my sceen with "Remote Mode" with a *(star) in it on (F4). On that says "Display Functions" on (F7) and the last one "Auto LF (F8). Once the machine is in a "running" state it disapears and i have to connect my console cable to access the server.

It looks like there is an access port card (internal modem) installed. Could you please remove this card and try again?
The card could be the reason of your problem, because it is re-directing the tty devices.
