Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

@ A. Clay:

There is only one type of systemboard for all D3xx systems. So the MAC address will remain (see my explanation). For SW ID the value from the board is used, not the "faked" one from the OS.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

This may not even be an issue -- it depends upon the existence of license servers and how they are implemented. Some only care about the IP address of lan0, for example -- and you would then be fine. The HP_ETHER_STATION_ADDRESS value in /etc/rc.config.d/hpetherconf may also be recogized by your license server. Your vendor (if still alive) may be able to generate new keys. Bear in mind that many UNIX software packages rely upon your honor and do no license checking, so all may be well as long as your upgraded machines conforms to the original license agreement.

The ultimate license "fix" may be to put everything back as it was.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

Well, things did not go well. The 3rd party vendor sent 6 512MB modules. In order to get those to work, you have to update the pdc code... which you can't do anymore since hp doesn't supply it.

The only thing that got upgraded was the power supply. Now we are running into another issue:
The D350 boots from a Jamaica box thru SCSI connections. It doesn't boot. I get a "Warn A008" message and it won't go any further. We tried to seach for boot devices but, it just doesn't see them. We have rebooted the server and the jamaica box several times. Any suggestions?

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

Try to upgrade again, use the small DIMMs and update the firmware:

ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/firmware_patches/hp/cpu/PF_CULU4211.frm

description:

ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/firmware_patches/hp/cpu/PF_CULU4211.txt

Are you sure you inserted all I/O cards and connected all cables to the original positions?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

Maybe the boot path was reset to default while you was upgrading the hardware. Try a "search ipl" at the boot prompt. It's important to cable the system exactly like before the upgrade.

Hope this helps!

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

The tech didn't have the power plugged into the board correctly. We've gotten that fixed. We were having an issue with the boot path but, that has been fixed, too. Now, the issue we are having is that it is sitting at "INIT CEDF" and won't go past there. We've left it for about 1/2 an hour. Any more suggestions?

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

It appears that the kernel does not recognize the new equipment. I know that the kernel needs to be rebuilt but, have no idea how to do this. In the past, I would always make some kind of kernel change and then rebuilt it but, don't know what needs to be changed now.

"It appears that the kernel does not recognize the new equipment" - Why do you think so?

Hope this helps!

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

The kernel will not boot. And, after further research, I have found that the OS is 10.01 instead of 10.20. So, our only options are to max out the memory on the current motherboard (1536MB) or upgrade the OS to 10.20 to be able to upgrade the motherboard to one from a D370. Unless you guys can think of another option.

Re: D350 Hardware upgrade

I think to remember the kernel parameter swapmem_on have to be set to 1, but I don't know if this applies here. Just check it.
(remove the new CPU board, insert the old, boot and check).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
