Drive replacement on rp8400

Hi everybody.I need to replace a internal disk drive on rp8400.Reading the Service manual from MIDAS it says that the system power must be removed before replacing drive. In the white paper it says that these are hot-plug disks, so they can be removed and inserted while the rp8400 continues to operate.Which one of this is true?

Re: Drive replacement on rp8400

Hi

its true if its a hot-plugable disk you can simply pull it out and stuff another one in. BUT if you are able to do a power down I would always do this first.

cheers
John.

Re: Drive replacement on rp8400

Hi Berislav

It is true that the drive can be replaced w/o switching off the server provided you ahve the drive mirroed and that the drive doesnt have OS or a paert OS on it , otherwise the system would crash. I would take a backup before attempting any such thing , the better way is to swtich the machine and do the rest , it saves lots of trouble.

Re: Drive replacement on rp8400

Hi,
Be carefull and do not confuse hot-pluggable with hot-swapable. Hot-pluggable means you can add an extra "whatever" during operation ... however, removing one means bringing the system down. Hot-swapable means you can add an extra "whatever" during operation and remove one during operation ...

I would take no risks and bring the system down !

Re: Drive replacement on rp8400

Hi,

These new rp8400 are supposed to be the ducks
guts. These servers were built with HA in
mind. The parts are placed in these machines
so that if something does happen to go wrong,
it can be replaced with no downtime. I have
two of them and although I haven't had to
replace a hard disk, you can as long as it has
been mirrored.

I've actually pulled one of these open whilst
the power was on and installed an additional
HBA card, just to prove a concept.

So, Replace the disk, I don't see the problem...

Cheers

Re: Drive replacement on rp8400

Hi Beri

That is exactly what i referrring to in my previous response , break the mirror by

lvexntend -m 0 /dev/vg00/lvol*

and then replace the drive.
