Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

Is it possible to dual process a HP9000 A-Class server with two PA-RISC 8600 CPU's, and run HP-UX11.23 on it ?.
Or is this a very silly question ?.

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

It depends on which A-class system you are talking about.

The A-400 is a single-CPU system. The A-500 can be a dual-CPU system.

The A-series machines (A400, A500 and rp24xx) are supported for HP-UX 11iV2 (11.23).

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

HP marketing imposed firmware limitations
on some rp24xx systems may prevent you
from successfully adding a second CPU.

For example, an rp2430 is limited by
marketing to 1 CPU and 2 GB RAM,
even though you could put a second CPU
and more RAM in it. (Which would make
it equivalent, IIRC, to an rp2470 ?)
By "limited" I mean that the machine
may refuse to bootup, possibly stopping
during POST. (I haven't tried it.)

Remember the HP Way? Marketing didn't :(

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

Thanks for your replies.

It's an HP9000 series A-500 (A5570B), I presume this means we could possibly do it.

I've searched the HP web site looking for instructions on how to add a second processor, but can't find anything.

Do you know if there is any documentation anywhere that explains how to go about it ?.

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

Hi,

You appear to have an rp2450 (based on
the part # you cited). I think I've seen
some manuals at docs.hp.com that discuss
adding hardware to such a machine,
but I can't recall where they were.

Andy,
Give this a shot:

I hope this helps.

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

On PA-RISC you can load only 11iv1 (11.11).

11.23 is meant for Itanium!!

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

TT,

No, that is not true anymore. With HP-UX 11.23PI you **CAN** run 11.23 on PA-RISC servers. This release is also known as HP-UX 11i V2 Sept. 2004. In the 11.23PI nomenclature the PI stands for PA-RISC/Itanium meaning it can run on BOTH.

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

Hi,
All A-series and 24-series support dual processor. For A400 and rp2430 you need to buy an upgrade option (software enablement key). The hardware for A400/500 and rp2430/2470 is identical.

Re: Dual Process HP9000 A-Class

Dear Patric,

Thanks for that update. I was just reading the same from software.hp.com

Anyway thanks for correcting me!

Now can we say PA-RISC & Itanium are fully binary compatible? (same code)
