Effects of Low Voltage Input AC on rp7410 / rp7420?

We think lower than normal AC power supplied by city and building AC power may be causing strange effects on our 7410 & 7420 systems. We're fairly certain our old UPS equipment is not filtering this out.

Does anyone know what effect lower than normal voltage supplied to the power supplies does to these systems? We experienced what appeared to be cell and fibre/NIC card component failure but when these components were removed and reseated into their slots, they began functioning again.

Our clue that it may be input power related is that two rp systems located in separate buildings but on the same power grid experienced the same symptoms at the exact same time when known fluctuations were happening on the grid during this time.

Thanks,

Mo

Hi Mo

Input Voltage range for rp74XX servers is 200-240V. Generally +/- 5% tolerance is acceptable. Suggest monitor power surges using power line analyser. You may plan to install Isolation Transformer (same capacity as UPS) before UPS which will help to filter out surges which cannot be handled by UPS.

Re: Effects of Low Voltage Input AC on rp7410 / rp7420?

Mo,
The minimum operating voltage for an rp7410 is 180 volts, per the site prep manual. Voltages lower than the specs will cause any number of strange conditions and adversely effect the operation of your server.

Here's the link to the site prep manual, for your information:

I hope this helps.

Good Luck - Tim

Re: Effects of Low Voltage Input AC on rp7410 / rp7420?

Start by measuring your UPS line voltage going to the rp systems. If it is lower than 210 volts, get the UPS repaired or JUNK it! Your servers, the very expensive fibre/NIC cards and most important, all that disk storage are all going to have big problems with low voltages. Your computers, disks, tape drives and network devices are far too expensive to put them on cheap UPS systems. (if your UPS system isn't cheap, then get it repaired) The rp systems may shut themselves off to protect the power supply and the computer but your other devices may not and they can be damaged by low (or high) voltages.

Get a better power feed and ups or do repairs. You will probably have problems with odd errors and data corruption if you let this keep going.
