External Console for K Class

Hi,
I have some old K-Classes to look after, but they don't have a GSP and are in a remote site.
Can anyone recommend external consoles to buy to connect to these servers.

Re: External Console for K Class

Hi,

I would recommend to use the HP Secure Web Console. Ask your Sales Rep for product and price information.

Using this HP Secure Web Console is fully supported by HP for this HP9000/800 K Class.

Re: External Console for K Class

are they still making the secure web console. Last i heard it would only work with windows 95/NT running explorer 5?

Re: External Console for K Class

The web console (note the missing word: secure) will work with IE-5 and higher on any WinXX platform. However, if you have several K-boxes (and network devices and other Unix boxes, all needing a 'real' terminal for maintenance, I would suggest looking into a terminal concentrator. These boxes can handle 2 to 48 ports depending on the model, use telnet and SSH, and some even have a backup access port via modem. Ideally, this concentrator would be connected to a secure LAN as all your consoles are vulnerable (just like GSP consoles). Secure console servfers are available from Cyclades, Digi, Avocent, Lantronics, Raritan, and Logical Solutions.

Be sure to look at the "console" servers, not KVM switches. These are invaluable for remote support as they provide a secure method to access the console even when the machine is not connected to the network or running networking.

The web console is good.

For local use, you can buy the 700/96 terminals.

I'd say:

The web console is fair ... it mostly
sort of works, as long as you don't
expect/need good HP terminal emulation.
(It beat out hpterm for "world's worst
HP terminal emulator ... but lost the
title to Power Term :). Also, IIRC, you
can't copy/paste text from it to anything
else, which is highly annoying.

Rather than buying a terminal, you might
just put an old PC to use. For an
HP terminal emulator, you could look at
the free "QCTerm" from AICS, at

Re: External Console for K Class

Why you don├В┬┤t try making between two servers each one console server for each other? Like using ssh for example to enter one and entering other one console from this crossing serial cables?
It is the cheapest option and the only problem is if both servers connected with cross serial cable fall down at the same time.
