Firmware updates for servers...

Everyting from rp7400s to rp5470s, rp8420s, etc.

Is there any one facility best suited for performing a firmware sweep on a myriad of HP servers? In the last 5-7 years, I've been tasked w/building one new machine after another and then passed the system on to junior admins for general support. Now I'm finding my priorities shifting and I'll need to go back and look at (some of) these machines to verify firmware levels before upgrading the OS level or adding new hardware.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Joe ,

You can find the current Firmware version from logging to GSP , in the top of HELP meny ...as follows:

Hardware Revision 8 Firmware Revision A.01.12 Oct 23 2002,13:53:42

GSP Help System

Enter a command at the help prompt:
OVerview : Launch the help overview
LIst : Show the list of GSP commands
: Enter the command name for help on individual command
TOPics : Show all GSP Help topics and commands

Re: Firmware updates for servers...

Hi Joe,

if you use something like

#echo "sc product cpu;info;wait;il"|cstm|grep PDC

you can get easily the PDC revision. Write a nice script to get the information you need.

Since the PDC is OS installable, you can swcopy the several patches to a depot and use the SD commands to distribute.

Issue swinstall from server A to install the patch from server B on server C makes this easy.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Firmware updates for servers...

I want to add a note.

the OS installable firmware works fine with the rp7400 and rp5470, but the cell based systems are complex enough and I recommend to involve an HP customer engineer for doing the update. If you want to do this on your own, follow the instruction step by step. missing a step will your system likely make unusable.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Firmware updates for servers...

Hi Joe,
you can find the firmware version using mstm. Also on the pdc you can know it by typing in then fv.
As Torsten said you should take care when doing the upgrade cause any wrong step can harm the machine.
