Free slots in K-460 & K-580?

Greetings,

We have some old K-class servers - specifically a K-460 & a K-580. We have some hardware we would like to add to them, however I am not sure how many free slots / ports are available.

Is there a way to check what's "free" from the UNIX command line (K-460 HP-UX 10.20 / K-580 HP-UX 11.00).

Reason I ask is last time we got someone in here to install a card, he pulled out the expansion board that was in there only to find that some bright spark had just put an empty expansion board in there - there was no electronics attached to the expansion board! Doh! Waste of everyone's time.

As you may be able to tell, these machines were hand-me-down machines with-in the company.

I don't particularly want to take a screwdriver to it, and I definately do not want to shut down these machines to check.. but I'm willing to be misled by any advice people can give me..

Looking forward to your advice.

Cheers,

Glenn.

Glenn,
You can't tell from a command line if a 2 slot or 4 slot expansion card is installed. You just see the bus converter, not the single slot. But you should find a product or part number on the card. They would help???

There is no good troubleshooting with bad data

Re: Free slots in K-460 & K-580?

OK, just went wandering off to the computer room to check the back of the machines again.. couldn't see any part numbers all it says on the back of the board is:

HSC Expansion I/O

With the usual 8/0, 8/4, 8/8, 8/12 next to the slots...

Cheers,

Re: Free slots in K-460 & K-580?

Hello,

Unfortunately, there is no way you can do that without opening the server. Even if you try from pdc to see what IO you have installed by entering "in" and "io", this only works if some card is connected to it. Even MAPPER won't help.

Re: Free slots in K-460 & K-580?

Glenn,

Can you provide a "ioscan -fn"?

Also, you do not need to take the back off to determine what IO card slots are available! Go to the back of the machine, and identify everything in the back.

Re: Free slots in K-460 & K-580?

I've attached the ioscan -fn from the K580.

The ioscan -fn from the K460 will be here shortly.
