HP A400 Server Upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade memory on A400 server to 2GB. When I install the new memory I get a fatal error on bootup. I'm installing the memory in 256 pairs, part #A5797.

sounds like you may have a faulty dimm or its not seated correctly.

where exactly does it stop and what is the error?

does it get to PDC and try and boot hpux or not that far

Check the errors in the gsp logs, this may tell you where the problem lies

if you can get the system to PDC check the memory here

It does not get as far as booting up HP-UX. This is what comes up after we power on the machine:

Fatal power or environmental problem prevents operation

Source Detail: 1=cabinet ID = 0

Sounds like you have a defective DIMM. I install those DIMMs into my A500 regularly without issue. I would try it with just two DIMMs and see if you still get the errors. If you do try the other two instead, and you might be able to tell which DIMM is causing the error through elimination.

The A5797s are for the 9000 L / RP54xx servers, for the A / RP24xx servers you'll need the:

A5840A 512MB High Density SyncDRAM Memory Module
A5841A 1GB High Density SyncDRAM Memory Module
A6114A 2GB High Density SyncDRAM Memory Module

You probably have a conflict mixing the A style memory with the L style memory. I would remove those A5797s and see if it does the same thing, if it does, get the recommended memory for your A400.

Agree to the above update #A5797 are meant for L2000.

If you are looking for a A400 Dimm then you need..

A5840-69101 (256MB DIMM)

We found some of the boards to be damaged.
