HP Hardware

What is the smallest (physical size) box that can run UNIX? Is there anything smaller than an L-Class?

Re: HP Hardware

The smallest of the current crop is the rp24xx. See:

Re: HP Hardware

Hi,

Certainly the rp2400 line aka A-class is smaller - about the size of a standard PC mini-tower, but rack mountable. And there have been some truly pizza-box size workstation class systems like 712 & 715 that were quite small.

Re: HP Hardware

in the server level, the entry level h/w is A-Class or rp24xx series which are 2U height when rack mounted that I know of.

Re: HP Hardware

If you are talking about a box, b2600 is the smallest PA-RISC workstation currently that can support HP-UX. You already got the answer for the HP servers.

If you are talking UNIX in general, then even you can load Linux on a regular PC.

Re: HP Hardware

Oh & a couple of years ago there was an A-180 - not related to the A-400 & A-500 that are the rp24xx line now - that was 2u high.
It ran the PA-7300 CPU & the early models could even run HP-UX 10.2 as well as 11.x. Was one of the last units that could.
Was targeted at the ISP market IIRC.

Re: HP Hardware

It looks like the new rp3410 and rp3440 are about the same size as the rp24xx series machines. The rp34xx have the new PA8800 dual-core CPUs.

I meant to post the HP9000 entry level servers link:

Re: HP Hardware

This should be small enough for you:

http://www.hp.com/products1/servers/integrity/entry_level/rx1600/specifications.html

It's only 1U - smaller than anything listed above.

Re: HP Hardware

Doug is right the rx1600 is 1U, the rx2600, rp3410, rp3440 are all 2U. The L-class is 7U, but really 8U if you put it on slider rails. The smalles replacement for a 4 processor pa-risc system is the rp3440.
