HP9000 d270 ultra 2 / 3 disks

I while ago I was able to lay my hands on a HP9000 d270, just for playing around at home.

The machine has 2 original 4,3 Gb disks. I replaced the disks with 2 18 Gb Compaq ultra 3 disks but ioscan does not recognize the disks.

Is the hardware compliant? or do I need specific firmware for these disks?

It depend from SCSI type.
If your Controller is WD it can not work with LVD.
If not :) probably yes :)

New disks are LVD.

use ioscan -nf
Look for controller and you will see :)

The D270 can only use High-voltage differential SCSI disks (HVD FWD). The ultra3 you are trying to put in are LVD scsi. The 2 different types will NOT work together at all.

try ebay for the 18GB FWD for that box:

Hello Peter,
How did you replace the disks?
If you have FWD disk they are in a Hot Swap black box. Have you changed the internal mechanism of this boxes?. The Compaq hotswap chassis doesn`t fit in the hp9000 D270.

Or the disks were into the chassis fixed with screws and connected to an SCSI-2 bus (50 pin male connector)? In this case you don't have an FWD HV bus and maybe if you force your disk to SCSI-SE they can work.

Regards.

Re: HP9000 d270 ultra 2 / 3 disks

Peter,

The D270 has internal Single-Ended Drives (up to 2, IIRC) and they are installed similar to a K-class or a PC, with 4 screws in the sides of the drives to bolt them into a metal cage. the D370 has Fast-Wide Drives in a black case with a blue handle on the bottom of the drive for hot-swapping.

Which config is yours?

I thought the D270 had the option to go to the FWD disks. Need to do an ioscan to see exactly what you have, or double check the original drives. FWD and Ultra 2/3 are not electrically compatible. Note FWD is sometimes calle HVD or High Voltage Differential.

The D270 definitely can have the FWD Hot Swap cage put in. The D270 we have is configured as such.

Re: HP9000 d270 ultra 2 / 3 disks

I believe that the upgrade from the D2xx to D3xx *is* the FWD hot-swap cage. So technically, your D2xx was upgraded to a D3xx. According to the configuration guide, the D2xx series have SE SCSI internal drives.

Peter, how are you running ioscan if you can't use the internal drives?
