Hardware support after end of sales?

To all,

The 'discontinued server page' listed below shows that the rp2400, 2470, 7400, 7410, and 8400 have been discontinued/retired. Is there a link which shows when hardware support will be stopped? HP has provided a link for the 3000's and I'm looking for a similiar link for the 9000's.

Thanks in advance,

Chuck Ciesinski

Re: Hardware support after end of sales?

Wow, I can't believe that they're not selling the mini-domes with PA processors anymore. There is still supposed to be one more PA chip in the future (PA-8900). Anyways, I don't have the dates - but HP supports this stuff for 5 years after it is no longer listed as a sellable item. Supposedly, you can still buy parts for those servers during that same time period in which support is still available.

Re: Hardware support after end of sales?

I have been told that new PA-RISC processoars and hardware purchased today will be supported until 2012.

Anectodal. They do seem to be pushing Itanium though.

Re: Hardware support after end of sales?

John,

I'm still concerned since all of these have HP3000 equivalents and HP is stopping support on 12/31/2006 for those systems. I'm wondering if HP will have any problems supporting one and not the other?

I hope this helps:

Basically states:

How long will the converted HP 9000 rp2400 series and rp7400/N-Class servers be supported?

These models have various end-of-support dates. For the HP 9000 rp2400 series the end of support dates range from 2007-2010, and for the rp7400 servers the end of support dates range from 2007-2008.

Although the hardware conversion kits will be available through 2006, customers who expect to convert in the 2006 timeframe may want to instead take advantage of the aggressive rebates available with the Trade-up Program. This program provides an easy, inexpensive way for customers with older servers to attain the benefits of being on the latest HP-UX server technology.

Re: Hardware support after end of sales?

The picture for the 3000 servers is worse ( and not so worse). Support for those servers was at end of life and in the "5 year mode" about 3 hears ago - so I think you've only got a couple of years left. However, if you're counting on the UNIX equivalents to get you over the hump, and you know it works - then you've got the 5 year window to keep you going. However, I heard that the 3000 series stuff had same hardware but different firmware levels - so, if that information is correct - that is where you could be exposed to risk.

But, to address you last concern, I think b/c you're on the 3000 platform - you're at greater risk - IF the information about different firmware is true.

Might want to consider buying some spare servers from a used computer dealer to keep in a supply closet for parts replacement if you're not going to be off of those servers long. Whole servers like what you've got should be cheap enough right now, unless you've got a mini-dome, but I don't think that those units made it to the 3000 line.

Re: Hardware support after end of sales?

And the good news is that there are many 3rd party vendors selling replacement parts and even hardware support contracts for really old (and unsupported by HP) systems. The good news is that as HP hardware gets old, it gets very cheap. !0 to 20 year old machines are selling for as little as a dollar per pound, so it makes sense to buy some extra boxes and use them as cheap development platforms as well as hot spares

Re: Hardware support after end of sales?

HP's minimum support dates (YYYY-MM-DD): (note that these usually get extended by as much as 3-5 years)

rp8400: 2010-01-31
rp7410: 2010-01-31
rp7400: 2008-12-31
rp2470: 2010-01-31
rp2400: 2007-10-31

Note that the rp8400, rp7410, and rp2470 are still being sold remarketed (like-new with warranty) currently, and generally HP's policy is to support any system that they sell for a minimum of 5 years after they sell the last ones.
