hi,

easiest way is to walk round the back and have alook.
If thats not possible then
#ioscan will list all the interfaces and hardware paths, they can be worked out from this output.

reboot the server and stop the system from booting and type
in io
this will list all slots on the system and what cards are insatlled in which

or by connected to the GSP (control b) while system is running and checking here

hi again,

Also the n4000's support a maximum number of 12 pci cards, 6 in each side

Re: How do i find out the available IO slots in a HP9000-N4000 server

Hello,

With ioscan -fn you get the hardware paths and you can see which of the slots are used.
Following table gives an overview of the relation between slots and paths :
PCI Slot 1, 0/5
PCI Slot 2, 0/4
PCI Slot 3, 0/12
PCI Slot 4, 0/8
PCI Slot 5, 0/10
PCI Slot 6, 0/2
PCI Slot 7, 1/12
PCI Slot 8, 1/10
PCI Slot 9, 1/4
PCI Slot 10, 1/2
PCI Slot 11, 1/8
PCI Slot 12, 1/0
Be aware that the N4000 (or rp7400) server has 12 expansion I/O slots accessible through side panels on the rear of the SPU chassis. Six slots are located on each of the two sides. Slots 3 through 12 are ├в TwinTurbo├в slots supporting 66MHz, 64-bit I/O cards. Slots 1 and 2 are ├в Turbo├в slots supporting cards with lower speed and bandwidth. If higher speed cards are installed in slots 1 or 2, they will function but their performance will be reduced. Similarly, slower cards can be installed in slots 3 through 12, but their performance will not be improved.

Hope this helps,

If you have the online diagnostics installed (Support Tools Manager, STM), you might prefer to use the map command:

# cstm
cstm> map

This should produce a nicely formatted display that might better suit your needs than the ioscan command.

Shameem,

N4000 have 12 slots , 6 slot each side.

There is no command from OS you can see which slot which card is connected , but you can MAP throug the above illustration given with Slot Vs PATH , with ioscan and cstm.

Well, the easiest way to tell whether the slot is occupied in an N-class is the rad command:

rad -q

Won't tell you what it is unless it's a cell-based system like an rp7405 or higher.
But it will tell you whether the slot is occupied or not.

drift - what leads you to believe that you have 900 MHz CPUs in your N4000? I do not recall any PA-RISC processors running at 900 MHz that would have been usable in the N4000. The model string suggests you have 440 MHz CPUs...

How about using "ioscan" to see what is there?

Oh...I missed that first time through.
I must agree 100% with Rick Jones.
The fastest processor *ever* offered in an N-4000 was a 750MHz unit. And they weren't around very long before the rp-7410 came out.
And it should report as
9000/800/N4000-75...maybe even as ...9000/800/rp7400-75....as they renamed them about that time.
