K-class 4MM dat drive

Does an HP K-class running 11.00 have to be shutdown to replace its 4MM dat tape drive?

If the DDS tape drive is internal to the K-class, then yes, complete shutdown and turn off the key AND remove the power cables. The drive is in large metal box with the CDROM and disk drives (it's heavy).

BTW, internal components in a box like the K-class cannot be serviced on a powered system which is why for production servers, all the internal disks, tape and CD are replaced with hot-swap external boxes.
