L-class servers will not startup after memory install
We have 2 L-class servers (rp2450) which had 3GB RAM (6 x 512MB cards).
We purchased 1GB cards to install on each server and take up to 8GB each.
After the install on both servers, neither machine will start up. In fact the power supply now seems intermittent ie the fans run and then stop continuously.
If we unplug the system from the power supply the same condition persists. We are desperate.
Any ideas?

Graham

Re: L-class servers will not startup after memory install
First of all you mentioned wrong product name ( rp2450..its A class systems).
As you must know , L class servers supports upto 8GM RAM but must have 2GB modules to make it 8GB , you cant have other combinations to make it 8 GB in each server.
so you need to get 4 nos of 2 GM modules ( 1GB X 2 DIMMs) .
There are different rules for L1000/L1500/L2000/L3000 servers , so if you specify the exact system , I can help you further how to load this modules.

Re: L-class servers will not startup after memory install
ejector clips should be in the upright, locked
position - otherwise the memory is not seated
fully.
2) check to make certain you are following
the load order on the slots, and that you have not mixed sizes on the same slot number (i.e. 1A 2A have the same size of memory in it).
3) check that you do drop any foreign objects into the chassis.
4) Are you getting a chassis code on startup?
5) strip out the old memory and see if the problem goes away. Are you certain that the
system board you have supports the size of memory you are installing.

Re: L-class servers will not startup after memory install
Are you sure about those DIMM sizes?
Memory is added in *pairs* of DIMMs.
So if you were getting 3GB out of only 6 DIMMs they would have had to be 2GB DIMM pairs.
So if you added a pair of 1GB DIMMs you would only get to 7 GB.
Were they HP branded DIMMs? HP systems are quite finicky about their memory. You may have a bad DIMM(s)
Remember the rule of thumb w/HP memory - Largest DIMMs go in the lowest numbered slots. The other rule is the *pair* of DIMMs must match - i.e. can't pair a 1GB DIMM with a 2GB DIMM.

Jeff

Re: L-class servers will not startup after memory install
If you take the DIMMs out again, does it boot like it did before?

Re: L-class servers will not startup after memory install
Thanks for all the responses. We loaded the original memory and the problem persists. Thw system doesn't even get to a point where error codes/msgs are noted. Power is on for no longer than 1s. To clarify, we replaced the 6 x 512 MB cards with 8 x 1GB cards and it is supported HP memory. In fact we now have the one system up and running with the new memory. It seems that the problem on that particular server was an unterminates scsi connector since both servers share (somehow) two disk arrays. For the still defective server HP provided us with a procedure for stripping down the system in order to diagnose the problem and it now appears to be either PSU or main board. Yikes!! $$$$$
